Bask in the Baja sunshine at the legendary Mexican beach resort
Cabo is the pinnacle of paradise for so many people — vacationers, Hollywood A-listers, rock stars. Even whales love Cabo. Why do so many fall in love with this mesmerizing place? For one, Los Cabos delivers 360 days of sunshine per year (yes, you read that right), white sand beaches, amazing food, and rich cultural experiences. Sitting on the southern tip of Baja California, the Los Cabos area consists of the twin towns of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, plus the long stretch of coastline in-between. And it’s fairly accessible, with direct flights from most major cities on the East and West coasts.
To me, there is something alluring about the vastness of the endless Pacific Ocean coastline and the marine life, larger and more plentiful than one might expect. For water sport enthusiasts, the waves lure surfers of all skill levels. But I chose to scuba dive in the Sea of Cortez. There were thousands of fish, manta rays, and other sea life, like eel and sea urchin. There are some truly notable dive sites to log.
Two tips for fans of the ocean: One, the water here is markedly colder than the Caribbean. You’ve been warned. Second, the notoriously strong riptides can create dangerous swimming conditions in certain areas, so we recommend booking a stay with access to swimmable beaches.
Forget farm-to-table restaurants: Flora Farms is a farm with a restaurant. And not just any restaurant, but one that attracts the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow and George Clooney. The draw? Healthful, delicious dishes made with just-plucked produce; the seasonal wood-fired pizzas are always a good bet.
Okay, The Office on the Beach is a bit touristy, but for good reason. Tasty seafood dishes and traditional Mexican cuisine served on neon-pink and yellow tablecloths set directly in the sand. Inside, the walls are lined with tequila bottles for sale. Come on Thursdays, when the fiesta includes live music, fireworks, and piñatas.
World-renowned chef Enrique Olvera of Pujol in Mexico City, and New York’s Cosme opened Manta, a fine-dining hot spot at the Thompson Hotel in 2018. Inspired by “the simplicity and elegance of the desert,” it’s as elegant as it is inventive, with dishes like tempura fish tacos and wagyu yakitori with roasted pineapple purée. We’d expect no less from a chef with two places on the World’s Best Restaurants list.
